COURSE INFORMATION
Certificate In General English
This course is designed to improve the key skills areas of English Language Proficiency.
It is structured into 4 modules. In each module, special attention is given to the 5 macro-skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing and Use.
SSTC uses FLAME (First Language Assimilation Method for English) teaching methodology.
Objective
Module 1
The aim of this module is to build a strong foundation in a student’s language proficiency with emphasis placed on spoken communication combined with reading and understanding.
At the end of the course, students will be able to understand straightforward information in spoken and written English. They will also be able to express themselves in speech and in writing for simple practical purposes. On completion the students will be intermittent users of English.
Module 2
The aim of this module is to help students achieve communication skills beyond social conversation, and to communicate effectively in simple content areas.
This course is designed to enable students to comprehend various texts in different content areas. Lessons are focused on semantic and syntactic features merging language functions to develop students’ ability to express logical arguments coherently and effectively in English.
At the end of the course students will be able to make simple introductions of topics and have a fairly fluent conversation in English. They will also be able to write and speak coherently when expressing their information, ideas, feelings, opinions and general facts in straightforward and grammatically accurate spoken and written English.
On completion, the students will have sufficient mastery of English to communicate in a clear, simple manner.
Module 3
The aim of this module is to not only help students achieve effective communication and academic skills beyond social interaction, but also to communicate fluently in specific content areas.
Lessons are focused on semantic and syntactic features merging language functions to develop students’ ability to express logical arguments coherently and effectively in English.
At the end of the course students will be able to understand main ideas of complex texts and will have the ability to interact, with a degree of fluency and spontaneity. In addition, students will be able to express the advantages and disadvantages of various options in grammatically accurate texts and essays on familiar topics.
On completion, the students will be able to describe experiences and events, hopes and ambitions and briefly give opinions and explanations for plans.
Module 4
This course is designed to enable students to comprehend advanced texts in different content areas.
Lessons are focused on semantic and syntactic features merging language functions to develop students’ ability to express logical arguments coherently, effectively and influentially in English.
Programme Structure
There are a total of 4 modules. Each module is conducted over 12 weeks.
Lessons are Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (with 3 breaks)
Mode Of Delivery
Lessons are held six hours a day – three hours in the morning and three hours in the afternoon. Each classroom is equipped with a color projector and whiteboard. Teachers conduct interactive lessons supported by Powerpoint slides and use the whiteboard as needed. Students are encouraged to speak, listen, read and write in each lesson. Students are asked to work individually, with partners, or in groups to complete assignments. Students are expected to take good notes during each lesson and review those notes for homework each night.
Admission Criteria
Completion of entrance exam at appropriate skill level. Those attaining higher skill levels will be allowed waiver of modules.
Returning students with completed modules will be allowed to enter into the next module.
Progression Criteria
Average of 75% or higher from three monthly assessments in each Module
Graduation Criteria
Completion of Module 4 with assessment score of 75% or higher
Attendance Criteria
All students need to attend at least 75% of classes and to be eligible for a certificate of attendance.
Students’ Pass holders are required to maintain an attendance of 90% and above to meet the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority requirement.
Assessment / Examination
Monthly assessments are conducted to measure the student’s competency in Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Usage.
