Blood Donation Drive At SSTC

Posted on 29 March 2012

On 27 March 2012, the Singapore Red Cross turned SSTC’s auditorium into a makeshift hospital ward, setting up temporary beds so that staff and students can do their bit to increase the reserves of the blood bank.

Over 80 staff and students volunteered for this event which was organised by SSTC’s Student Welfare Manager, Mr Robert Sweithelm.  ”This activity will help our local community and at the same time, instill in our students and staff feelings of personal pride, self-respect, and moral integrity, in line with our Core Values,” said Mr Sweithelm.

It was indeed heartening that so many people volunteered for such a worthy cause. Encouraged by the response, other community projects will be organised later this year.

SSTC Shows it has Heart

Posted on 27 February 2012

Throughout its 34 year history, SSTC has done her part in helping students in need to achieve their dreams and aspirations. Just after Christmas Day in 2011, Ms Serene Koh from the Make-a-Wish Foundation contacted SSTC about a young lady named Miss Toh Si Bao.

Si Bao had a serious medical condition which prevented her from attending school regularly. However, she persevered through her numerous operations and eventually completed her GCE ‘N’ Levels in 2011.

Si Bao had a dream to study business administration and eventually obtain a degree. When Make-a-Wish Foundation made a request to SSTC for a scholarship for Si Bao, the Management immediately approved a full-scholarship for her to cover 100% of her course fees and external examination fees.

Si Bao will be starting her LCCI Private Secretary’s Diploma and LCCI Diploma in Business Administration in March. SSTC will provide her with all the support to help her achieve her dream.

SSTC GCE O Level Students Now in NUS

Posted on 27 February 2012

Congratulations to Nguyen Thuy An (Anna) from Vietnam and Nay Vongvichra (Vichra) from Cambodia, our top 2 GCE O Level students in 2008 for successfully entering NUS. Anna and Vichra were friendly competitors at SSTC during their studies in 2008. Either one of them would take top place in the monthly assessments. Both did fabulously well in their GCE O Levels and went to Junior Colleges. In 2011, both students informed SSTC that they were successfully admitted into NUS. Anna is studying for a Business Administration degree while Vichra is studying Environmental Engineering.

We congratulate them and all others who were also successful and wish them all the best in their studies and future careers.

GEMS 2011 Group 1

Posted on 08 June 2011

It was a tiring but very exciting and rewarding week for 32 Vietnamese students and their two teachers from Hanoi who came on a learning experience that they will not soon forget. Between their arrival at Changi airport on 29 May and their departure on 6 June, the students had a taste of General English, Math and Science, the SSTC way.

Aimed at making their Singapore experience truly unique, a major part of the learning was done outside the classroom while they discovered Singapore. The General English, Math and Science (GEMS) Camp is the summer holiday program that offers students from many different countries a most memorable experience.

Offered by SSTC School for Further Education, the GEMS Camp has three important goals: improve the students’ English Language, allow them to discover Singapore, and ensure that the students do this in the most enjoyable way.

Classes were conducted at SSTC’s location in Singapore’s bustling centre and were very different from what the students are used to back in their own countries. Their teachers were also their guides, and the morning classes were organized in such a way that the lessons continued into the afternoon during the excursions. What they learnt in the lessons were directly related to the outings.

Everything went as planned, even when the weather sometimes threatened to dampen spirits. During the week, the students visited Chinatown and Little India and got a feel for the multi-cultural environment that is Singapore. An afternoon was spent at the Singapore Science Center, where students were amazed by all the different exhibits and activities. The students learnt about Singapore’s advanced solution to its water issues at the Marina Barrage and at the NEWater plant. Hay Dairies, the Jurong frog farm and the Green Rose Aeroponic Vegetable facility gave the students a look at where Singapore gets some of its produce. Two whole days were spent on the island of Sentosa. The first day at Sentosa allowed the students to take a day off from the lessons and spend a day in the world of Universal Studios. Their last day in Singapore was spent exploring the other attractions at Sentosa, including the Merlion, Fort Siloso and Images of Singapore. They capped their very enjoyable stay in Singapore with the magnificent Songs of the Sea performance in Sentosa.

If you are interested in signing up for the next group, please contact info@sstc.edu.sg for the next available camp.

The Lion Comes to SSTC

Posted on 15 February 2011

The lion dance has been part of the Chinese culture for thousands of years and is performed on auspicious occasions such as weddings, store openings, and various festivals and celebrations. The lion which is a symbol of power, wisdom, and good fortune chases away evil spirits and brings happiness, longevity, and good luck to those around them.

Staff and students at SSTC were fortunate to have witnessed the lion dance performance at our New Wing during the Chinese New Year’s Celebration, on 8th February 2011. The lion is believed to bring prosperity and good luck to the business for the upcoming year.

Many of the students were enthralled by the Kung fu martial artists that form the lion. The artists portrayed great strength, stamina and versatility. The lion moves to the beat of a musical ensemble consisting of a large Chinese drum played with two wooden mallets, a gong, and one or more sets of cymbals.

During the Chinese New Year, it is a tradition for the lion to go from business to business to perform. In conjunction with the opening of our new extension, affectionately known as the West Wing, the lion presided at our premises with all the traditional rites and stances.

Our school principal, Ms Rose Yeo “fed” the lion with oranges, a head of lettuce, and included a red envelope filled with money. This ritual brings prosperity and wealth to the business for the coming year.

Just before the performance was over, Ms Rose was then presented with a scroll which read, ‘May your ambitions ride on the crest of success’.

Squeals of glee and resounding applause brought the dance performance to a close and everyone went home with light hearts and warm smiles.

Posted on 27 December 2010

We all witnessed great displays of talent and enthusiasm on 15 December as students from SSTC performed songs, dance and skits to close the end of term.

Certificates of attendance were given as recognition of our achievements and diligence throughout the term. The students were also rewarded with a motivational speech from Mr Wayne Ho and we left that day in high spirits and hearts filled with joy and peace.
